Pick & Pack

For awhile my son worked at the local Walmart. He was a personal shopper for the order pickup. As he described the process for how they did the shopping, it reminded me of the picking process in a warehouse.

We tend to think of them as personal shoppers, but really the job isn't that different from any warehouse picker. You have an order, you locate the items for the order, you gather them near the shipping area. 

Do your pickers do one order at a time? OR do your pickers pick like items from the same area of the warehouse? How much time do you think the pickers spend traveling between the shipping are and where the items are? Some reports account for up to 55% of the employee's time is spent just moving between the locations.

At the end of the day successful warehouses adopt more and more efficient ways of getting things done.
