Scan it

A lot of WMS systems are designed for shelving. The "slots" or "bins" or "positions" each get a barcode that attaches to the shelving and when you put something away the you scan the location to tell the system where.

What are you supposed to do if you don't have shelves....like this:

Your WMS system should be flexible enough to let you store inventory the way you want/need and still allow you to implement scanners for quickly storing inventory and locating it.
